Weekly Briefing (03-11-2006)

After some time spent studying Jan Mendling’s paper about density and programming its formula, we already got the density metric implementation done.

You can see a second screenshot of our plug-in with this functionality working.

At this point we are waiting for new complexity metrics that will be given to us by our advisor. He is working with a colleague from the Eindhoven University of Technology that is visiting our island, in order to create those new metrics.

As soon as we receive them we’ll implement it in our plug-in.

While we wait, we’re working in a PHP image survey tool implemented by our fellow colleagues. Our advisor asked us to make some adjustments in order to introduce a new functionality.

With regard to the metric that we talked about in the last week’s briefing, we must confess that it is not easy to implement since graphviz is a tool that only addresses the design of a business process. Since we haven’t been able to come up with an idea to calculate a business process’s visual complexity, our advisor proposed us the creation of a simple metric based on its structure.

We’ll try to make it happen, but even a simple metric requires a lot of research, so we’ll do our best.

The good news is that once we have the plug-in ready it will be sent to the ProM development team. Once they receive it, they’ll make some test to verify its correctness and, if everything is ok, it will come out with the next ProM release.
